How to apply for tenant membership of the Society
Our waiting list is currently closed (June 2008).
Taking on an allotment for the first time can be an exhilarating,
rewarding, tiring and time consuming task!
We welcome new members, and below are a few questions that you might like to consider before applying.
How much time can you spend each week on the plot?
- In the winter months making a weekly visit is fine, but in
the spring and summer months and you have seeds and plants to water
you will need to visit the plot more often, in particular during hot
weather.
- Watering using a watering can take up to an hour a day. Hoses on
our site can only be used to fill the water butts.
Can you afford to take on a plot?
- From January 2008 the rent will be £30.00 a year (to be confirmed).
- On joining the Society members also buy one share at a cost of
£1.00. This is a one off payment which is not refundable.
- You
may be asked to pay a deposit for a key to the gate.
- You may
need to buy tools if you do not have them already.
- You will
need to be able to buy seeds and plants, compost and other items to
maintain your allotment, such as a watering can.
- You may need
to buy a hose to fill the water butts.
Have you had any gardening experience or grown fruit and vegetables before?
- If you haven't, then we suggest thinking about the vegetables
you like to eat, what you would like to grow, and then read up
on how to do it.
- Try and identify friends and family who can help out or advise
you.

Can you get here easily?
- The allotments are located at the end of Bisson Road, London, E15
(this is not a postal address). The site is adjacent to the Prescott
Channel and within the Three Mills Conservation area.
- The 25, S2, D8 and 108 buses pass the top of Bisson Road.
- It is a 10 minute walk from Pudding Mill Lane DLR, and a 15 minute
walk from Bromley-by-Bow underground station
- Another way to reach us is to walk along the towpath. For example,
from Limehouse you can walk to the allotments in 30 minutes. Cycling
is also permitted on this towpath.
- There is also some street parking with no restrictions. However,
travelling to the allotments by car can take a long time, especially
during the rush hour, since we are close to the A12 (Blackwall Tunnel
Approach), the Bow Flyer, and the only access is via High Street,
Stratford.
The waiting list was closed in June 2008, but we expect to reopen
the list in 2009.
