LATEST NEWS - WORLD WAR 2 BOMB MADE SAFE - SITE NOW OPEN

Thanks to our contacts with Volker Stevin (the contractors building the Prescott Lock) we were promptly notified that they had found the unexploded bomb on Monday lunchtime (June 2nd 2008). We immediately took the decision to evacuate and close the site, which was closed until Saturday June 7th when we checked that the official cordons had been removed

The bomb was found very close to the area that used to be allotments that we handed back to British Waterways in February 2007. Many of our current allotments lay within the exclusion zone. One of our members has an old Anderson shelter on his plot - we didn't expect it would be needed again.

We would particularly like to extend our thanks to the Army for their long, intense and obviously extremely hazardous work in dealing with this incident so close to us.

West Ham Allotment Society Limited is in the process of significant change
